Origin of Standard Red Poodles
In 1980, Ilse M. Konig from Shangri-La Poodles in New York, USA traveled to Germany where she attended a dog show and saw and admired a red Miniature poodle. Upon her return to the USA she could not find a Standard RED poodle, so she decided to CREATE her own. Ilse and Janet Blanin of PALMARES Kennels in Oregan, joined forces in the experiment.
Ilse sent a small English apricot Standard female to Janet who mated her to an oversized red Miniature. In Europe you could mate the different sizes if the difference is below 10 centimeters.
It was also permitted in Western Australia, AUSTRALIA until the late 1980's. Ilse kept the first litter of 4 red babies. The problem came later on. The heads were Standard Poodles, the legs short like Miniature Poodles. While they were cute, they did not have the temperament of the Standard Poodle nor the size.
The European standards allow for four sizes of poodles, Toy, Miniature, Medium and Standard. The Medium size is also known as "Caniche" and are 35cm - 45cm tall. The standard size is 45cm and up to 60cm tall. The Australian standard, on the other hand, only allows for three sizes, the Toy, Miniature and Standard with the Miniature grows between 28cm and 38cm. The breed standard for the Standard poodle is anything over 38cm.
It took several years of breeding and keeping red poodle puppies to come up to the standard of the BIG poodle. Today they all fit the bill.
Shertonah Poodles are proud to be one of the first breeders to import the lovely RED Standard Poodle to Australia and to have produced Australia's first, second, third and as of this date ONLY CHAMPION true red standard poodles.
